Using a BIONZ XR processor and a 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, the FX3 records 4K video with internal 10-bit sampling at 4:2:2 or 16-bit raw. In mixed lighting conditions, the BSI sensor achieves greater clarity and sensitivity, and the ISO 80-409,600 range is expandable.

Besides supporting VENICE, FX9, and FX6 sources, S-Cinetone mode offers colour and tonal control, as well as 10-bit HLG support for HDR productions. As part of the sensor and processor, the sensor incorporates a Fast Hybrid AF system with intelligent focusing and subject tracking capabilities.
